FAQs
- If you think your waters have broken, in other words, when you have experienced a loss of fluid that you can’t control and is not urine. That means that the amniotic sac surrounding the foetus has broken and is popularly known as ‘water breaking’.
- 2 or 3 strong contractions every 10 minutes or not as rhythmically if you have a history of fast labours.
- If you have begun to bleed as if you were having a period.
- If you can no longer feel the foetus moving.
- If you feel generally unwell or if you have a temperature for no apparent reason.
- If you are experiencing a painful constant contraction that does not stop.
- To the clinic’s Emergency Department; they will take your initial details, give you and ID bracelet and will send you to the Obstetrics Emergency Department.
- If it is a scheduled birth (induction/caesarean), go to the Admission Service so that they can coordinate your admission.
- Your pregnancy card or your obstetric record sheet with the results of the last analyses.
- Documents that you have been given at your appointments: pain control informed consent, admission…
- Insurance card (IMQ, Sanitas, Mapfre …)
- ID card (DNI) or passport.
For the mother, we recommend:
- A couple of short-sleeved nightdresses that open completely down the front to make breastfeeding easier.
- Dressing gown and slippers
- A couple of breastfeeding bras with cups that open and nursing absorbent pads.
- High waisted or single use underwear, particularly for the first day after giving birth.
- Your essential hygiene products: neutral soap, shampoo, a hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste, and all the creams you use.
- Change of clothes (loose and comfortable) to go home
For the newborn:
- 6 cotton babygrows
- 3 or 4 pyjamas
- 1 swaddle blanket
- Travel changing mat
- Nappies
- Toilet articles: sponge, etc.
- Bibs
- Rope to go home in
- If it is a normal birth, you will be kept in for around 48 hours
- If you have had a caesarean, you will stay for between 3 and 5 days.
We will ask about your choice of pain control, your birth plan if you bring one, along with filling in the Informed Consent and we will answer any doubts you may have.
The epidural will be given, as applicable, when the contractions begin to be uncomfortable or painful. If things are going smoothly, you will be able to walk around the room with low doses of pain relief.
There is always a duty gynaecologist at the Clinic, along with midwives, paediatricians and other healthcare professionals to look after you. You will be cared for and looked after at every moment.
You should discuss with your gynaecologist any questions you may have about the process. When you are admitted, you can tell your care team about your wishes and concerns.
